Buying Antique Furniture in Southampton

Published on: April 25, 2018

Now is the best time to buy antique furniture

Why is the best time to buy antique furniture now? Because the price of antique furniture is at an all-time low which makes it the best time to invest for two reasons: because now you can afford that 1920’s farmhouse table you always wanted and because, as you know, in the antique world those prices won’t stay low forever. Visit your local antique store in Southampton and get in now while you can!

The antique market has definitely taken a turn. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, the demand for antiques was low. Then a surge hit and the height of the market was 20 years ago. Now, the market is low again but it doesn’t mean collectors should stop shopping. Quite the contrary, actually. The days of highly sought after antiques are still ongoing. Don’t think that furniture and objects from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries aren’t still in demand. There are segments of the market where there is incredible value. French furniture never seems to waiver, for example.

While there is no single for the market decline, any declaration of market trends involves a large amount of speculation; there are a few easy culprits to blame for antique furniture’s decline. The first reason is the simplest to detect: tastes have changed. Many people in the 1990’s and early 2000s wanted modernist furniture that depicted their glassy luxury towers with floor-to-ceiling windows that don’t allow for furniture placement against their exterior walls.

The other main cause of antiques declining may be demographic. Many of the people who could afford to buy $50,000 dining tables in the 70s and 80s are dying and their heirs are less than eager to hold on to their parents’ furniture. As they try to sell off their inheritance, the rising stock and diminishing demand can cause prices to drop.

As this newer generation moves in, they are more environmentally conscious and they want to “upcycle” older generations of furniture. This is causing demand to rise again and it’s only a matter of time before the prices match the demand. Now is the best time to buy antique furniture whether you are an investor or collector. There is always going to be a demand for it whether a large demand or not.

Visit your local antique shops and have a look around. Many varieties of furniture can be repurposed without losing the integrity of the piece itself. For example, that beautiful 1900 hutch can be used as a display piece for your grandmother’s old pottery or china that has been sitting in boxes for many years. Give life to your family heirlooms by finding pieces that compliment it. The eclectic look has been in style forever and it can certainly go with your mid-century modern house or contemporary pieces. It’s all about layering and knowing your own individual tastes.

When collecting antique furniture, do it because you love it. At Antique Allure, we want you to find pieces you love.
